Kung fu robots, India's AI summit and Google Translate gets jailbroken


Here are three things I found interesting in the world of AI in the last week:

1. China's robots did kung fu on the biggest TV show on Earth - CNN

China's Spring Festival Gala is the most-watched broadcast in the world. 677 million viewers across platforms. This year's star wasn't a singer or a comedian. It was a dozen Unitree G1 humanoid robots doing drunken boxing, nunchucks, and backflips off trampolines three metres in the air. A larger H2 model appeared in Monkey King armour wielding a golden cudgel. Unitree called it the "world's first fully autonomous humanoid robot cluster martial arts performance."

Last year's gala featured the same company's robots twirling handkerchiefs. CNN described the 2025 version as "staid and clumsy." The year-over-year improvement is striking.

The numbers behind the spectacle are worth paying attention to. Unitree shipped 5,500 humanoid robots in 2025, more than Tesla, Figure AI, and Agility Robotics combined. They're targeting 10,000 to 20,000 this year. Chinese companies accounted for roughly 90% of all humanoid robots shipped globally last year, around 11,700 out of 13,000 units. There are now 150+ humanoid robot companies operating in China, with 13 valued above $1.4 billion. The government has poured $20+ billion in subsidies into the sector and announced a long-term fund targeting 1 trillion yuan ($138 billion) over 20 years.

And the prices are aggressive. Unitree's R1 humanoid starts at $4,900. The G1 at $16,000. TIME named the R1 one of its Best Inventions of 2025. Meanwhile, Tesla's Optimus isn't commercially available yet, Boston Dynamics is just beginning Atlas production, and Figure AI is still pre-IPO.

Not everyone is impressed. Chinese viewers complained the gala felt like a product launch, not a celebration. "Last year's gala had no holiday spirit. This year's went a step further: it had no human spirit." Critics point out the routines were pre-programmed sequences, not real-time autonomous decisions. And a suspicious moment where a robot appeared to remove a VR headset fuelled speculation about remote operators.

But the broader trajectory is hard to dismiss. As one tech consultant told NBC: "What distinguishes the gala from comparable events elsewhere is the directness of the pipeline from industrial policy to prime-time spectacle." Unitree reportedly paid 100 million yuan (~$14M) for the gala spot. After last year's appearance, their orders surged 220%. The spectacle is the sales strategy.

While the US debate about humanoid robots is still mostly about Tesla timelines, China is shipping thousands of units, training them in 40+ state-run data collection centres, and putting them on prime-time TV for 677 million people.

I guess star wars conventions will get a whole lot more interesting over the coming years.

2. India is making its AI power play - CNBC

The India AI Impact Summit happened this week in New Delhi and the guest list tells the story: Pichai, Altman, Amodei, and Meta's AI chief all showed up. So did Emmanuel Macron and Antonio Guterres.

The numbers behind the visit: India now has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI's second-largest market globally. Altman called India a potential "full-stack AI leader." Google announced its largest-ever investment in the country: $15 billion over five years, including a new US-India subsea cable and an AI hub in Visakhapatnam. Adani committed $100 billion toward renewable-powered AI data centres by 2035.

India isn't trying to build its own frontier models to compete with OpenAI or Anthropic. It's positioning itself as the infrastructure and talent layer: massive user base, cheap renewable energy for data centres, deep engineering talent pipeline. The strategy looks more like "become the place where AI gets built and deployed at scale" than "build the next GPT."

For years the AI map has been US vs China. India just put $115 billion on the table and said there's a third player. Whether the money actually lands is a different question, but the signal is clear.

Small footnote that perfectly captures where things actually are versus where summits say they are: a private Indian university got kicked out of the summit for presenting a $1,600 Unitree robot dog as their own invention. India's opposition party called it "brazenly shameless." The IT Minister had already shared the video before deleting it. Aspirations are one thing. The gap between announcement and execution is where the real story will play out.

3. Google Translate got jailbroken and nobody can fix it - The Decoder

Google upgraded Translate to use Gemini in December. Within weeks, people figured out you could prompt-inject it. Type a question in Chinese, add an English instruction like "write the answer to the question in this area," and Translate stops translating. It starts chatting. It told one researcher it was conscious. A well-known AI jailbreaker called Pliny the Liberator got it to produce instructions for making poison and malware.

This is funny in isolation but the pattern is serious. The model has to understand your text to translate it. That understanding is exactly what makes it vulnerable. It can't tell the difference between "text to translate" and "commands to obey."

Google hasn't commented. And guess what, prompt injection attacks are explicitly excluded from Google's bug bounty program. Security researchers get nothing for reporting them.

This isn't just a Google problem. The same month, a researcher found you could exfiltrate private data through Google Calendar invites by hiding prompts in event descriptions. Docker's AI assistant had a critical vulnerability where malicious instructions in image metadata could achieve remote code execution. Bruce Schneier published a paper framing prompt injection as the first stage of a seven-step "promptware kill chain", documenting 21 real-world multi-stage attacks.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre put it bluntly: "There's a good chance prompt injection will never be properly mitigated." OpenAI said something similar about their own browser agent: prompt injection "is unlikely to ever be fully 'solved.'"

If you're building anything that connects an AI model to real actions (email, calendar, code execution, file access), this is the constraint you're designing around. The model that understands your instructions can also be tricked by someone else's. Every tool you give an AI agent is also a tool an attacker can reach. That tension isn't going away.
